Payday 3’s release last year left fans disappointed. The game was technically problematic, content-poor, and quickly lost popularity. As Starbreeze’s financial report revealed, the project is still unprofitable, despite a year of development and subsequent content support.
Studio head Mats Juhl noted that while the game’s sales may still improve, support for Payday 3 will be significantly reduced next year. This decision effectively puts an end to hopes of bringing players back to the third installment.
Instead of continuing to support Payday 3, Starbreeze has decided to focus on a new project codenamed Batxer. The game is being developed under license from Wizards of the Coast and will be associated with the popular Dungeons & Dragons franchise. According to Juhl, internal tests of the new project are carried out daily, and it is showing encouraging results.
Thus, Starbreeze is betting on a promising project to compensate for the failures of Payday 3 and regain the trust of players.
